Band Description:
When you’re listening to Sambateria, it’s not just awesome percussive sounds and contagious musical energy filling your ears; you’re listening to a unique mix of rhythms culminating into one sound that can’t compare. Like how the nature of music is a constant fluid motion, so is the nature of our collective. We’re in a perpetual state of development; always innovating, never resting on our laurels. We’re loud, explosive, viral, progressive, intense and uncompromising. We’re a workout for your ears, your eyes, your head, your body, your mind and your soul. And you’ll never want us to stop. We’re pilgrims on a journey, and percussion is our salvation. You may think you know what we’re gonna sound like. We say go ahead. Just send us a thank you card from when we blow your minds to sweet aural heaven.
Band History:
It was at the turn of a new decade when the percussive force known as Sambateria was formed. In mid-2009, a group of like-minded individuals got together to play samba percussion in a little corner restaurant named Brazil Churasco. What started out as an unforgettable night of samba dancing and drumming turned into a full-time effort to create a band that they could call their own. With percussion troupes typically numbering significantly more than standard bands, Sambateria initial 20-strong team was not uncommon in such circles. But where others saw management hell, they saw boundless musical horizons. Beautifully diversified in personal backgrounds and utterly driven in pursuing a one-of-a-kind genre of music, these funky individuals exposed themselves to a world of opportunity, performing at such big name events as the inaugural Singapore Youth Olympic Games as well as the nationwide percussion event Drumzout. Retaining their essence as street performers, the band also continues to entertain audiences through their equally energetic busking sessions. Such performances, while no doubt leaving indelible impressions on each and every drummer, also serve to enhance and enrich each of their performing and showmanship abilities – an important quality for any self-respecting practitioner of percussion. The band also got the rare opportunity to learn from authentic Brazilian percussionists. Hailing from Mocidade Independente, one of the leading samba schools in Brazil, the band gleaned invaluable experience from the experienced, while forging new friendships from across the globe. As the band grew in both experience and musicality, so did their repertoire. Songs were being churned out as fast as they could be conceptualized, each one never failing (so far) to get listeners on their feet. From the hook-driven groove that is ‘What The Funk’ to the swaying syncopations of ‘Reggaelele’, the band’s collective inspiration manifested in a myriad of forms. The percussive message was being spread, one beat at a time.
